If the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James changes his jersey number, he could become a boon to merchandising. Mr. James says he may ditch No. 23 in deference to Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and take No. 6, his number in the Olympics. Sales of the No. 6 jersey could bump Mr. James’s position on the league jersey-sales list, where he’s currently No. 2 (behind Kobe Bryant). An NBA spokesman says retirement of No. 23 would be up to individual teams; so it may fall to Mr. James to persuade the other 12 players who bear that number to switch on their own.
